The best indication I can give of Book 1 in this series, is that I've bought Book 2 to keep going with Zoey's story.Altho both are 3.5 star reads, this is writing with great pace and the books are a whole lot of good entertainment and fun, if getting a tad gory. This time Zoey isn't on the run so much as 'on the attack'. She's got the Fae Trade in her sights and they should be scared, really scared.Zoey is also finding herself in a big black spot, and losing her empathy, 'humanity' in many respects as her thoughts increasingly turn to vengeance and revenge against men (pretty much) everywhere and against those in the ARC.In the first book I had problems with the leap of faith required to believe that Zoey, raised in the confines of the ARC, could suddenly turn killer and pull off all the amazing feats she manages to pull off in order to escape, and stay hidden. This time because of what happened in Book 1, it's easier to believe Zoey has the attributes to do the things she does.I'll read Book 3, because there's a really good cliffhanger at the end of this book - and I want to see what happens next.
The second in a trilogy has the chief protagonist, Zoey, turning from one on the run to a girl very much on the offensive.Somewhere in the future, the world has turned into a dystopian society of survival. The human species has turned into fragmented small clans paranoid of other people, less unknown visitors are invaders to their safety. The populace, cities, and small towns have virtually become only remnants of their former selves; given to roving bands of murderers and kidnappers of young women. Young women are at a premium, given a genetic mutation in which mostly all newborns are male. No birthing of girls is the basic setting for a very good thriller. We have here, the same cast of characters as in the first installment. Their personae has been well developed in a short time. Mr. Hart has given them clear personalities. We have two factions: the good and bad; no middle ground. The story does have its share of twists in a society mostly gone mad. It all makes for a very entertaining read. The end of this novel leaves the reader with an excellent cliffhanger to bring us into Book 3.One suggestion is, as in most all trilogies, the novels need to be read in order
This is a very thought provoking series in so many ways. The science fiction style genre and the problem that society faces based on that along is intriguing. But the additional personal psychological path of the characters in particular the heroine is dark and raw. I did feel this book got more self critical of herself than the previous which was more leaning towards the hyper self righteous and quest for what is right. This second book was far more questioning the this for that mentality. I think it's very well written. Creative story line and I am enjoying how the story is being woven. Definitely recommend.
There are many parts of this book I really liked. I always like the good versus evil scenario -- very strong in this book. The good, easy to like characters, easy to identify with; their beliefs and emotional commitments are clear. The evil, well they are certainly easy to discern, except for one or two who are in a grey area, where you wonder, are they truly evil, or extremely misguided. All in all, i found this to be a very good book. It continues right after the first one. Many of my opinions of the first book are also contained in this sequel -- which is a definite continuation of the first, cliffhangers and all, as the third one will be (hopefully without the cliffhanger)! I found it a compelling and dynamic storyline, with characters I could mostly identify with, and, it carries a very unique plotline. Some reviewers tried to liken the two books to other novels. I don't agree with those assessments, I believe it stands by itself and rightly so.
I loved this series. I would recommend it to anyone, and honestly I have recommended it to a lot of people. The story is engaging, keeps you interested, action packed, real, just an over all great read.It frustrates me that some people in the comments are so critical. I want all you guys to ask yourself a question, do you think you can write a book half as good as Joe did? And if you think you can then I challenge you to do so, then let me know when its done so I can read your "masterpiece" and review it.I loved Zoey, she reminds me a lot of myself. I would have made the same decisions she did.For those saying that they would have escaped and knew something was wrong before that. How? If that was the only life you knew? Talk to people who have been in similar experiences, when you are in there, even if you think there might be more, the idea of leaving can be terrifying. As a child growing up in that atmosphere where thats all you know and everyone you know says that there is danger beyond, and that was engrained in your mind, no you wouldn't have thought other things. Look at the child soldiers in Africa. For those saying that a girl doesn't know how to identify a gun, stop being close minded and sexist. When Zoey described the guns, by name, I, a gun owner and former competitive shooter, knew exactly what she was talking about. She could have heard the guards saying its name to know what it was. And as a writer, it would be absolutely foolish to spend a whole page describing what a gun looks like. That would both be boring and draw attention to something that is not important. For the sake of the story, even if she didn't know what it was called, by saying what it is called, for the reader instantly gives us the image in our heads, so we can get on with the story. Also I have seen a lot of people shoot a gun for the first, second, third time etc and be pros right off the bat. Just understand the weapon so naturally that no, they didn't need crazy training to be a good shot. I think the book was made similarly to the Hunger Games and Divergent series and I think thats great. Thats whats in right now, that dystopian style is flying off the shelves, and I think this was well executed and would love if it turned into a movie. Those of you criticizing that this book is "another dystopian story" obviously forgot about how the market works. Remember twilight? How many stupid vampire and werewolf books, movies, and tv shows came out after that? At least this book wasn't complete non sense like those were.Anyway, Great series, went through withdrawals when it was over. I wanted to know what would happen next. Hell, I decided to finish the book and see what happened than watch the NBA playoffs. and that really means something if you know me.
