I totally enjoyed the book and "her story." I took off one star because I thought the quality of the book printing could be better.

Like most people, I was first introduced to this story from the show on Netflix. While waiting for the new season to come out it prompted me to buy the book and see how similar it was to Hollywood's spin on things. The book is MUCH different than the show. And better. The book, while it is a memoir written by Piper, makes her out to be a much better person than the Piper on the TV show. Now, if you haven't read the book or seen the TV show and you have plans to, I suggest you stop reading because there are SPOILERS ahead....The real Piper, whose last name is Kerman and not Chapman, didn't seem as conniving or crazy as the TV show Piper. She didn't take part in a dirty panties operation, didn't do her time with Alex Voss (only a few short weeks when they were testifying in Chicago), and never got starved by the head kitchen worker. As an avid reader, I get it - the book is always different than when Hollywood takes over and makes dramatic effect on it.The book was very informative - it displayed women bonding in a situation that is less than desirable for most of the human population. While most women, when put together with other women in cramped up places usually proves as challenging and scary, Piper Kerman talked about the positives when it came to serving time together. She included many details that the show leaves out - it was nice to actually get in her head and feel the emotions of doing time.I'm giving it 4 stars because it took me a little longer to finish than other books. While not a bad book, there were parts where I had a hard time focusing because it felt repetitive and unnecessary. If you were into the TV show, check this out. While there are shades of similarities, the book is extremely different than what Netflix has shared with us.

Prison fascinates and horrifies me. My favorite TV show is Prison Break, so I thought I'd give Orange is the New Black show a try. While the TV show wasn't for me, I'm glad I read this memoir about an upper-middle-class woman who goes to prison for a year. I had the pleasure of meeting the author at a book reading/signing at a women's prison, and she is lovely in real life.Piper Kerman's real-life story chronicling her year in prison is insightful and thought-provoking.At times the writing impressed me, like this vivid description:"Miss Sanchez had long Frito-chip fingernails painted Barbie pink."There are interesting insights into prison life."Prison is quite literally a ghetto in the most classic sense of the word, a place where the US government not puts not only the dangerous but also the inconvenient--people who are mentally ill, people who are addicts, people who are poor and uneducated and unskilled. Meanwhile, the ghetto in the outside world is a prison as well, and a much more difficult one to escape from. In fact, there is basically a revolving door between our urban and rural ghettos and the formal ghetto of our prison system."My favorite "character" is the Russian wife of a mobster, Pop. Pop is the head cook, and gives invaluable advice to Piper.This story makes the reader inevitably wonder how she would handle imprisonment. I resonated with Piper helping an inmate write a paper. I also would try to fit exercise into my daily routine to stay sane. But really, it's hard to imagine how awful imprisonment would be.The groping from male guards infuriated me:"Other male COs were brazen, like the short, red-faced young bigmouth who asked me loudly and repeatedly, "Where are the weapons of mass destruction?" while he fondled me and I gritted my teeth.There was absolutely no payoff for filing a complaint. I can get behind the decriminalization of drugs for personal use, but I disagree with the notion that drug dealers are never violent.Overall, a good read, and I'm impressed Piper is giving back by teaching writing to prisoners.

I very much enjoyed reading purely from Piper's perspective. The writing is vivid, she reserves judgment of most of those she's incarcerated with, and she gives the reader clear insight into how her prison experience changed her in so many ways for the rest of her life. I suppose I took away one star only because I've been such a fan of the series, which is so packed with action and filled with both nasty and lovable characters that I kept expecting the story to "light up" like the screen. On the other hand, I found that Piper and Larry's relationship was genuine, one which provided Piper some measure of stability the character lacks, unlike her on again, off again relationship with Alex in the series.

I felt this book had a rather simple but also very important message to deliver: don't go crazy overdoing it with your children's activities because they need time to play and learn on their own. At time they seemed to imply that despite enormous amounts of neuroscientific evidence to the contrary, theres really nothing you can do to help your kids develop into happy, healthy young adults. Just sit back and see what 'mother nature' has in store. To the extent that the authors sometimes seemed to say things along these lines, I disagree. Reading, music, playing , talking, walking in nature...these things may not magically transform your child into Einstein, but I believe (based on experience and copious additional reading) that they help with development and anjoymentbof life. I feel like this book basically could've been one page long.

As a parent of a 3 and 1 year old, I have felt the pressure of "schooling" and scheduling my childrens' time. This book puts the science behind that instinctual feeling that children just need to be children. The authors layout how children think and how they are built to learn without our help. While I didn't see it mentioned, much of their scientific findings relate and support the Montessori method. This book will inform parents on ways they can teach in context and through play which is the best way to help your child to love to learn. This mirrors the Montessori methods fundamental belief to follow the child.I feel this book has given me the support needed to resist outside influences which make many parents feel like their toddler "needs" classes, activities and reading programs. They don't, they need quality time playing with their parents who pay attention to their interests and then support those interests. Not worksheets and lessons that only service the parents desire.

I'm not a helicopter parent nor do I believe children's days need to be completely planned. In today's society I always have felt like I may be making a mistake but I'm pretty independent and stubborn. This book supports the idea that kids need to be kids!!! Love Love it. Oh and personal history I have 5 children and two have graduated and are attending college one studying deaf education they are very advance smart driven adults. My third has autism and I was told he would never speak and playing with other children helped him more than any "scheduled" activity. This is a must read.

The authors should be sued for using Einsteins name as pure click-bait for religious nonsensical ideas that should never have been published.p I am giving it one start only because I can't give zero stars. The authors of this book are either delusional or writing specifically to a target demographic whose IQ's fall somewhere between a peanut and rock.

This book fulfilled my hopes that it is largely based on actual empirical evidence instead of the multitude of myths that seem to prevail in American society and education. It seems a bit redundant in places, but over-all a good book for all. It could be quite valuable for parents of young children or those who are in the education business such as teachers and administrators.

(You can have them! They simply suggest you also have creative toys like dolls, blocks, dress up, kitchen & tool sets or Legos.) They go on to explain that access to toys like these encourage unstructured, imaginative play that help children learn about numbers, physics, geometry, the world and their feelings.This book tackles our most pressing questions, like how we will teach our children to read before pre-school and how we will teach them the concept of number symbols standing for actual quantities of items. Moreso, they explain to parents exactly how children learn and that parents are not the sole architects of the perfect baby brain. The back of the book organized the cites and references by chapter so you can look in to the research if you want to arm yourself with facts! In fact, I have talked so positively about this book, my friends are lining up to borrow it and I'm encouraging everyone to buy their own copy because you will want to keep this one on-hand. I'm buying one for the gal that lives up the street that just won't quit talking about how "smart" and "advanced" her one year old is because she buys educational toys exclusively!Honestly, you're going to find the answers you are looking for about how to both encourage creativity and teach the fundamentals your children need for Kindergarten. If nothing else, it will assure you that a relaxed, unstructured play day at home is one of the best things you can do for your child!

About the Author David Mozer is a consultant in bicycle transportation engineering and safety, and economic development. David has been active in bicycle transport planning and comprehensive planning programs since the late 1960's. By training he is an economist and has lived and worked in Africa. David first went to Africa as a Peace Corps volunteer in 1975. During the next two years he taught math and science, and traveled on foot hundreds of miles visiting isolated village schools directing an education extension program. David later returned to Africa on contract with the United States' Department of State. During this time he set up Liberia's largest and most successful credit union, administered a grant program for village development and analyzed economic conditions. He has bicycled 20,000 miles in Africa. In North America he has worked on projects in the United States and Canada for a variety of state, provincial and local agencies. About the Author

Thomas Pyzdek is a Six Sigma consultant with over 40 years of experience in the field. His clients include Ford, McDonald’s, Intuit, Boeing, Seagate, Avon Products, and many other companies. Mr. Pyzdek is a recipient of the American Society for Quality (ASQ) Edwards Medal for outstanding contributions to the practice of quality management and the E.L. Grant Medal for outstanding leadership in the development and presentation of meritorious educational programs in quality. He has also recently received a Lean Six Sigma Leadership award from the American Quality Institute.

Paul Keller is Vice President of and senior consultant with Quality America, a Six Sigma Training company. Nearly 3,000 students to date have used his Six Sigma training program to achieve Six Sigma Green Belt and Black Belt certifications. Mr. Keller is the author of Six Sigma Demystified.
